American Dipper Art Print

The American Dipper might look like a bird, but its behavior closely resembles that of a trout. As North America's only aquatic songbird, the American Dipper dives headfirst into chilly mountain streams to hunt for insect larvae, fish eggs, and even small fish. Although they aren't very graceful in the air, American Dippers are capable of swimming against strong currents by using powerful flaps of their wings to "fly" underwater. These birds surely earn the name "trout with feathers."

For most of the year, American Dippers are solitary and fiercely defend their stretch of the stream. But during nesting season, pairs works together to build domed nests and nurture their chicks.
