Macroinvertebrates, also known as macros or stream bugs, form the foundation of the food chain in river ecosystems. They are the primary food source for fish such as trout and salmon. As decomposers, they help to cycle nutrients up the food chain. Most macroinvertebrates are insects in their larval or nymphal form, taking anywhere from a few months to a few years to hatch into adults.
Featured species: stonefly, midge, air-breathing snail, aquatic earthworm, cased caddisfly, blood midge, crane fly, flatworm, dragonfly, aquatic isopod, damselfly, scud, caseless caddisfly, riffle beetle, water penny, black fly, dobsonfly, and mayfly.
A thoughtful gift for the one who loves to fly fish.
